The figure 8's knots are done to keep the tail hair protected and thus the hair will be able to grow longer before it gets snagged on something which causes the hair to break. Basically the same as a tail bag only the horse still has hair there to swish at flys and there is no actual bag that can get ripped out of the horses tail. Personally I hate the look of tail bags and I hate messing with them this is so much easier.

I understand now, and i did it to both of my horses tails today I did it to medallions mane, but my grandma made me take it out lol
