I personally like the look of field boots better, but that's just me.

and indiekisses, I think you're thinking of paddock boots.

Field boots are not shorter than dress boots. The difference is that field boots have lacins in the front, whereas dress boots don't. You can't wear field boots for dressage, but I think it is your preference for jumping/hunting. Well, unless you are at a very high level, in which case I would think that certain standards would have to be upheld.

Difference between Field and Dress

Both types of boots are the same in height which is acutally dependent on the riders calf height. The field boot, however, has a lace up portion at the ankle whereas the dress boot has no laces. The dress boot can be more restricting at the ankle, as compared to the field boot, since it lacks laces.

From my experinece, the "norm" is that hunter/equitation riders wear field boots (tall with laces) and dressage folks wear dress (tall without). In either discipline, children wear paddock boots (short) with jodphurs and garter straps. It is a personal (often trainer driven) decision when you move from jods to tall boots. In smaller, local shows, a lot of folks will start out wearing paddock boots and half-chaps, but not at bigger shows.
