Field boots - tight in ankle

So I just got a new pair of Mountain Horse Richmond field boots. they are BEAUTIFUL. The footbed is quite comfortable (I would say equivalent to the ariat paddock boots I've tried on. and they seem to fit well except... they are a bit tight in the ankles. I still can flex them, but my range of motion is somewhat limited. I know the leather will stretch over time, but should I worry about the zip failing? I can't loosen them any in the ankle because there are elastic bands where regular laces would be. Again they will loosen over time. I will say that they have a lot of support overall though

I have a pair of dress boots that my mom bought years ago and they are HUGE in the ankle but perfect in the calf. Does anyone know how much room there should be in the ankle of new boots? If these don't fit me I'd rather resell them and buy the appropriate size rather than destroy them.

I took some pictures of them on me so you can see what I mean (sorry... not best quality, I know):

The Zipper....

Profile with me flexing my ankle - obviously it will flex more with my weight on it....

Thanks everyone

Not sure why its underlining everything, but oh well, lol

Hrm... it doesn't appear to be showing the pictures. I'll try again later, but I have to do some mother's day shopping.

I've found that without buying custom boots, its very hard to get a perfect fit in all the major areas of the boot; Calf width, calf height, ankle and foot size.

You'll have to experiment until you find a fit that acceptable.

Ok well I can't seem to figure out how to insert pictures using the forum tools sooo I went with the old fashioned way. Here they are:

Way too tight or worth working with?

While custom boots might be worth looking into down the road, I don't think it would be a worthy investment at this time. Once I have my own horse and I'm riding every day it might be a possibility.

I can't really tell from the pictures....sorry.

Are YOU comfortable in them? Can you walk/move around in them without any pain? Can you flex your ankle, bend your knee?

Generally yes they are comfortable. The tightness in the ankle is mildly uncomfortable at times, but it seemed to get slightly better just walking around when I was wearing them. Also behind the knee there is slight discomfort but they are supposed to be that way until the break in (at least that was my impression).
