Feeding

Just talked to the vet since I wanted to alter Natties feed because shes dropping weight again. She is now getting

10-12 pounds of alfalfa pellets split up into 2 feedings
3 2" alfalfa flakes split up into 2 feedings
8 cups soy bean meal split up into 2 feedings
4 ponds of rice bran split up into 2 feedings
2 pounds Triple Crown 12% split up into 2 feedings.
1 flake Bermuda in the afternoon as busy food.

I think shes now getting as much as a 1800-2000 pound horse would get. Just to put weight on and i will cut a 1/4 of it when i begin working her harder to keep her weight.

Why so much a-pellets and so little hay, relative?

Some horses have an allergy to soy products, resulting in weight loss, or "hotness", or other issues.

2lb too many

That's what the directions say, correct?

She's not getting nearly as many calories as you think What SHOULD she be weighing? What is her weight now, how big is she, what breed, what's her work like?

Why would you think about cutting some of this out when you begin working her harder?

WOW..that is a complicated feeding plan..why not just go to one of Triple Crown beet pulp based feeds, they are high fat, high fiber and have all the vitamins/minerals your horse would need..all in 1 bag..just up her hay to 1-2% of her body weight...what age and breed is she? I'd suggest putting her on the Triple Crown complete or senior. they are 10% fat..fed a minimum of 5 lb a day and can be fed more for a good body condition... these put weight and keep weight on horses....they are low in starches and sugars, the senior has no grain , is beet pulp based, contains rice bran and tests at a NSC% of 11 (very low!!)..the complete has a little bit of oats in it, also beet pulp based, tests at about 20% NSC..your avg. pound of a sweet feed is 40% NSC, 1 lb of plain oats is 50% NSC just for reference..

Because the BO refuses to increase her hay so I have to add pellets.

Some horses have an allergy to soy products, resulting in weight loss, or "hotness", or other issues.
She was on soy when I first got her with no problems

2lb too many

Seriously?

Directions say (not sure actually I should read the tag next time)

She should be around 1200-1300 pounds right now shes 1100 pounds. She is 16hh and a Thoroughbred. She is just getting back into work from 2 months off from an injury.

Why would you think about cutting some of this out when you begin working her harder?
She is on a weight gain plan and will be switched to a maintence plan once sh reaches her desired weight.

My answers should be in blue

if you want good weight, and to keep it, my friend and i love Amplify, its made by purina i believe, its essentially the fat nuggets you find in their ultium food i get it for about 20-30$ for about a month on a fattening diet and about two months on a maintenance diet. it also has a lot of other good nutrients for horses as well, not to mention it tastes great, or at least our horses seem to think so, i some times give my horse a handful as a treat.

oh and it also seems to help them gain weight without making them hot

I've heard pretty bad things about Purina, in the dog, cat, and horse world, but if it works for your horse, then it works .

I'd up the hay and cut the rice bran and pellets. Check to see if there is a parasitic problem. Check if she has any allergies. Maybe give him half a cup of BOSS.

Her current weight, height, breed, and activity level are very important for us to know if we want to help .

I also back the Triple Crown products. Basically, based on what JessD said, and how many other knowledgeable horse owners here have calimed, I would really like to use Triple Crown.

Her workload in minimal shes coming off of 2 months stall rest from a fractured radius. she gets turned out in a 40' round pen and all she does is walk with a bit of trotting if theres a lot of horses out.

She is a 16.0hh Thoroughbred mare who should weigh 1200-1300 pounds she currently weighs about 1100 pounds.

I cannot up her hay because the BO will not that is why I was told to add a flake of Bermuda per day not only as busy food to keep her from cribbing but to give her some calories.

the Triple Crown 12% is helping her a ton since she is on the alfalfa pellets with the flakes of hay.

I had issues with the Purina when I had my mare on it mainly the fact she got really hot on it.
I love the rice bran shes on and I love the Triple Crown 12%
