Hmmmm, I thought that might be the case. I guess its a big industry at the moment. $250/pound of horse hair, WHOA that's nuts! I totally agree, I know its kinda dumb, but if I used them I don't think I would be able to use the ones with hide on them either. Thanks guys, I love how informative this site is.

Well, if you think about where leather coats and shoes come from, it can be sort of sickening. At least they are useing as much of the animals as they can so it's not wasted. They also use horse hair in bosel reins and some of those weird key chains.

You could say its crude, but I think it be worse for the horse to be alive and without a tail. That I think is worse, as it has nothing to use against flies.

JMO, but if you have a horse that has a wonderfully thick tail and something happens why wouldnt you shave off the tail? It will save you money in the long run on a fake one. I personally dont think its that bad, if a horse dies they will not be using it anyway. Shoot in the case of the horse that i was talking about before, if I hadnt had them shave off the tail it would have gone with the rest of Hairy, into the incinerators @ MSU.

You know, the on-hide tails may seem gross,..but any REAL fake tail (oxymoron huh?) once came from horse hide, so I don't see the difference in gross-factor, just like leather or rawhide dog toys. :S I have a fake palomino tail that I can't use anymore because I show a different horse whose tail is white + creamy palomino and kind of naturally curly and fine so it doesnt really match
I had a pony when I was little, and I free-leased him to a little girl because I was too big for him. I didnt have a car so i couldnt go check on him, but I asked her about him whenever I saw her.. Then he died and my mom didnt tell me till a few days after...I had wanted his tail, but they'd buried him
And also, I'm sure it upsets people to think about taking a horse's tail off after its dead, but considering where the horses are when their tails are taken, that's probably the "nicest" thing that will happen to them after they are deceased. If I died I think it would be kind of cool to donate my body to science, after all, I won't be needing it.

No I do agree with you. But like personally I would rather have the non on-hid tails. But yeah when my mare dies I want her tail, that way I would have something to remember her by.

I kept my mare's tail when she died, but never even thought of having it made into a fake tail.

If I ever get a chestnut in need of a tail, I would do it in a heartbeat. Magic's dead and gone... she will never be in need of her tail again.

Actually, most horse tail hair for tail extensions is imported from China, from LIVE horses. There, they harvest horse tail and mane hair and use it in their textile industry much the same as we harvest wool: horse tail hair and horse hair fabric for lining cloth manufacturer:Anping Yuandong Animal By-Products Processing Factory

Some of the less expensive tail extensions on the market are also imported ready-made from China.

Most reputable tail extension makers will not use hair from slaughtered horses. They would rather use properly dressed hair which has been, cleaned, sanitized and sorted for length and color.

Hide extensions, of course, are a different story.

Yep, that's very true. And, it's less expensive to pay import fees than to clean the tails of slaughter bound horses. I've got the tail of our friend's stallion that was put down. Just got done making some pretty necklaces and bracelets from it. Unfortunatly, because it's all different lengths, it's harder to use and we'll be getting bulk hair in for our jewelry, but will always make bracelets, keychains and necklaces (and baskets) from tails from loved horses. In fact, a group of friends are sending me little bits of tail hair from their horses for another friend who's got MS. We're making her a group tail with a prayer box on it for her.

That's really nice! I've tried on multiple occasions to attempt something like that and I can't ever get it to look right!
