Where I live right now we are having record lows temps. It has been so cold that I have not ridden my horse because I don't think it is just to cold. Tomorrow we are going to have wind chills around -30. How cold do most of you contiue to ride in? On top of that my mare is used to a barn with a heated idoor, but now that I am back home (not at school)I don't have an indoor, let alone a heated one. My mare has not even wanted to stay out long enough for me to cean her stall and clan her buckets. |

-15 is my limit. Its difficult for me because it goes anywhere from -5 to -45 in the winter! At least summers are warm, lol! |

It is about 9 degrees out today. The wind is whipping and 3-6 inches of snow expected. I guess our horses are tough. They are out today. We kept them in yesterday all day and all night. Tomorrow, the high is expected at 3. They may have to stay in tomorrow also. The wind is the problem here. They can stand the cold, they eat play and eat. It just makes my sister and I feel more comfortable having them in so we don't have to worry. The horses don't seem to mind as long as they are dry. We really don't ride much in the winter at all. When the weather is right we will go on a short trail ride. That gets hairy due to the slipping factor. We haul to an indoor about twice a month to ride. That gets hairy also because of the road conditions. Our animals need to time off any way. They work hard all spring, summer and fall. The winter is time for all of us to get fat and relax.

I've learned my lesson - I go out to see Shakira every day but I wear 3 of everything!! Socks, pants, and shirts. I only wear two pairs of gloves and one pair of boots though |

I live in the Upper Peninsula, almost to Canada. I ride every day twice a day in 3-4 feet of snow and we have been having temps -25 with wind chill. A couple of my horses have had the shivers, I give more food. Hay. Hay takes longer to digest and produces more heat then grains because of being digested in the large intestine. When you see steaming piles of horse poop, that is what is going on inside a horse. They heat from the inside out. Give more hay in the winter to keep warmer longer. Grain does do some heat but not for as long. Does your horse have its winter coat? If not, try blanketing after you saddle up. I have done this a couple of times just to warm up the horses. If she has her winter coat it isnt good to leave the blanket on after she is warm, flattens the caot and stops winter hair from growing. The cold doesnt bother the animals so much as it does us. Dress in layers and thinsulate gloves and boots work great as long as its over 1200 thinsulated. If you want to ride ride, dont make excusses not to. Winter riding is very beautiful and peaceful. Makes the winter go by faster and keeps the horses in shape. Also, remember to warm the bit up before putting it in the horses mouth. Frozen steel in a wet mouth isnt a pretty thing. Take it in the house or warm it up with your hand until "your hand dont hurt any more
