Chocolate is extremely lazy and he likes to break from the trot. He's also somewhat bouncy. I was wondering how I'd go about teaching him an extended trot and what it's really supposed to feel like. Thanks!

Extended trot is extremely stressful to the muscles and joints of the horse. Be very careful when schooling extensions! The horse should know all the ins and outs of collection, coming onto the bit, responding immediately to the rider's leg and using the back, loin and stomach muscles (rounding and lifting the back) before an extended trot is attempted. When all the pre-requisites have been met, then you need to teach the horse how to step deeper under himself with each hind leg. When the inside hind is going airborne, give a leg cue asking him to move the leg farther forward. Do the same for the outside hind. Master the extended walk before trying the trot. It's best to work with a trainer because once you "ruin" a horse's extended trot, it will be very difficult to retrain. The trick is to increase the length of each stride - not the speed in which the horse takes the strides. |

I've never seen this but I've heard you can put weighted bell boots on and they will extend more but talk to your trainer before trying that.

I've never heard of that. It might work, but it seems that it might just create a lot of knee and hock action.

Like I said I've never seen it done. But you may be right about just hock and knee action. It was a thought. I don't know how it would work.
