Ewe necks are ugly... Crested necks are sssexay!

haha u get the point...

So!, my boy has an average neck, almost ewe, no muscles on the top...
I'm dreaming about big crested necks (hmmmm iberian breeds) but unfortunalety, he's a quarter horse... (grrr)

this question has been asked so many times but im seeking a CLEAR answer here: wat are the exercises do to in order to obtain a stallion neck (lol, im daydreaming, but oh well...)

u have the choice: lots of canter? trot? uphill? downhill? pulling logs? i dunno! This muscle seems hard to build since everyone complain about that (we should all stop looking at andalusians and friesians pics and our problem would be fixed )

otherwise he is perfect...for a western horse (lol)
but his neck bugs me...

THANK U!

I LOVE the picture!!! As for developing the neck, I can't really help you. I gave my ex-gelding( I miss the Darryl..) a bigger neck through proper work, that's all I can really say... Really we just did dressage schooling- with lots of stretching, as we did basic dressage together. Sorry I'm not more help

Working him in the proper frame, from hind end to front will essentially build the propoer muscle you are looking for:] takes time and consistent correct work though

I think flexing through the poll and just general neck stretches should help. Also, if your horse is skinny, that doesn't help much either. I've seen plenty of built horses that have a dinky little neck because they're just still on the skinny side.

Could not agree more. That is the only way to develop neck muscles. My QH had a beautiful neck.

This is the QH - he has been retired for two years.

yep, there are many, many threads here about getting a horse to work correctly. Search words range from "ewe neck" to "hollow back" to "impulsion" to "frame" to "headset" to "topline"

A search should keep you busy for a while

thx ppl!

but when I hear 'proper work' i don't really know wat it means. Because I'm not doing any gymkhana and dressage and stuff... My boy is a simple pleasure horse: trails and kisses and funny tricks...lol

I lunge him every 2 days for 15mins each sides at every gaits, then I hit the trail in the mountain for about 1.5hour, which is more exercises then every other horses at the barn combined!

I like the idea with the surcingle tho, I'm gonna buy one.

any other ideas? please?

there should be no reason that you can't acheive a nice muscled topline "only" working on trails and pleasure riding. It will most likely take a little longer, but it is possible. You just need to get some impulsion and work him from the back to the front like everyone else has said thus far. It is really the only way to build the muscle, otherwise you may get the "look," but no muscle and your horse is not using themselves properly. Search through the forum, the list JBR gave you shoudl get you well on your way.

EDIT: I know JBR has an exercise that can teach your horse to use those muscles from the ground, rubbing along the base of their neck and pushing your fingers on their belly. I can't seem to find it right now though, but I'll look. I'm sure JBR can find it quicker than I
