a horse with an ewe neck has muscling in "all the wrong places" which causes the neck to come out at an upward angle. normally horses w/ an ewe neck their muscles by the jugular are hard while normally you want them loose. it just takes more effort for a horse to put his head down with one although it is just a common conformation flaw....

im not sure but i think it may also be genetic as some can be born like it!

its not a genetic thing. its happens because of the way your horse is worked if he doesn't have a head set majority of the time he will probably get a Ewe Neck. also when they run around in the pasture their head noarmally isnt down, so they can get it that way too.

A ewe neck can be genetic. That is when it is a conformational issue. It can also be caused by poor working (causing the muscles to develop in the wrong places on an otherwise 'normal' horse). Then it is not a conformational issue but a training issue.

Dawns go it, it can be genetic but there are things you can do to try and reduce the appearance of an ewe-neck. It takes a pretty kean eye to tell the difference between conformation & just training.

This image is from The Manual of Horsemanship The Official Manual of the Pony Club 10th Edition The Britishi Horse Society;1993 Warwickshire.

The diagram is a little exadurated so you can know what they are talking about an ewe neck on a horse would more likely look like this:
