Evil Mane-Eating Foal

Ok I have a mare that's got a mysteriously disappearing mane. There's a foal next to my stalls that we think is yanking out manes and tails. At 1st, my mare was only missing about a 2 inch section. I was upset but no biggie, it'll grow back and I could actually cut all the way up to the bridle path and she'll have an Arabian hair-do. I went to feed yesterday and the 2 inch section has grown into at least a 6-7 inch section and she even had some dried blood on her neck in that area. She's missing half of her mane!! The owner of the other horses in my stalls has caught this baby with hair in her mouth from 1 of her horses and took a picture, so we know who's doing it. Hopefully some MTG will help my poor bald girl. After the stalls are 100% mine, I'm going to put up some type of mesh on the fence so the baby can't get her head through. I never see the other owner there, so I can't really talk to him about it. I want to give him some choice words on breeding the mare in the 1st place (because she's as long as a dag-on bus) but that's a whole 'nother thread.

Now for the question: Once that spot heals, I'd like to put something on her mane that tastes nasty so the baby will leave it alone. What can I put on there that won't hurt my horse or make even more hair fall out? I don't care about what's already been pulled out, but I want to prevent my mare from losing more hair or bleeding.

My dog keeps pulling my horses tails out. I use the bitter apple spray. It's designed for dogs but it might work - unless the foal LIKES bitter apples.

Lol ya. It's no good if you're just encouraging him to do it. Otherwise I think it would work. I've never heard of that happening before though.... hmmm.....

Eqyss makes a product called McNasty. I spray that in the manes and tails of my mares with foals at their sides. Just don't breathe when you are spraying it....burns your throat!

I don't think the MTG would taste too great. You might get away with using that.

I'd switch the products up every now and then, if I were you. One of the horses in the stall next to Nugget has a bad habit of chewing wood, so the owners sprayed "No-Chew" or something on the wood around the stall and the horse developed a taste for it after about a week. Don't let the foal get too used to the taste of one product.
Good luck with the mane, and if all else fails you could always roach it ;]

I thought of roaching it since it's already halfway gone...and I would if it wouldn't take so long for it to grow back.

I know that most horses HATE extreme sour, right?
Buy lemon juice concentrate and spray into her mane/tale, undiluted.
That stuff is soo powerful. VERY sour.
