everyday grooming...good or bad??

ok so i have a new horse (iv had him over 3 weeks) and i want to see him everyday and groom him everyday.

i do the step by step: rubber brush, then stiff brush, then soft brush, pick hooves and wipe him with a clean cloth for that shiny look without using show sheen.

he is a very very dark bay thoroughbred and i know he has sensitive skin.
iv noticed that he is very light on his shoulders...its his skin showing through. not flaky or scabby, its like he is thinning . nowhere else but his shoulders...iv noticed this today, i know all the horses are shedding and he shedded ALOT but he hasnt shed that much for the past few days.

am i grooming him too much? or is it the type of breed he is?

I've never really heard of "over grooming". Do you have any pictures?

My tb is quite thin on her shoulder area also, but that was because she rubbed it out. As for over grooming, you could lay off touching that area and see if it makes a difference.

Grooming daily isn't bad as far as my knowledge, but you shouldn't bath a horse everyday, it dries out their skin. Hope that helps!

thats werid. my TB also has some thinning spots on his shoulders. but i think i just need to get him a "bra" for next winter to put under his blankies. i should think daily grooming would be a good thing..

I wish i could groom my horse every day! LOL...it might just be a bit thinning on the shoulder b/c it seems to be just bout the easiest spot to shed out with a rubber curry. Just kind of go lightly or lay off that area for a bit and see what happens

thanks you guys...do you think flax would help? his tail is kinda short and i want him to have a long one so he can swat those nasty flies away.

i would never bathe my horse in this weather...too cold and i think the most i would bathe is once a month. i use a dry cloth, its really handy as it flattens the hairs back down and gets rid of stray hairs on top of his coat.

i personally feel that grooming everyday is too much

(unless you are in showing an need to keep them tip top)

but over grroming can take their natural oils out of their coat!! i would just maybe spend time bonding in otherways not just grooiming an see if doing less grooming helps with the thinning of the coat
