Everyone- Please reread the ORIGIONAL post. This thread is not about Slaughter...it is about inappropriate breeding. Not against breeding...just breeding for the wrong reasons.

I used to Breed Paints. Well you might pay $750 for a nice stud or more. And then you would feed and care for the mares all year and then when it comes time to foal you end up with a breeding stock paint colt. (Not that theres anything wrong with breeding stocks) Just that when your breeding for color its nice to get color, and breeding stocks don't sell as well. By the time you acctually sell them you have lost money!!!! I've stopped breeding because its just not worth it. Like eveyone else said the horse market has so many horses out there the market is down as it is. I would rather buy what I want for the same price as a good stud fee, no wait, no dissapointment.

I only replied cause I never seen this post before.

I doubt there are many, if any small breeders who are going to make money on breeding. Unless you breed the ocassional horse that sells for 10 to 15 thousand dollars before it is a 2 year old I doubt you will even break even in the breeding business!
In this case (small breeder) I think you shold be breeding for yourself, breeding the kind of horse you like and will use and if you happen to come across someone who wants to buy it and your willing to sell then fine.
Leave the breeding for profit, or a living, to the people who have a LOT of money to start with...
When it comes to breeding for color...well, honestly, there is no reason now days not to put a foal with pinto markings on the ground. Now that there is a test for the pinto gene mare owners can produce a spotted foal simply by finding and breeding their horse to a stallion that is pinto homozygous. So people who want to produce a foal or foals with a patterned coat should do their home work and find a stallion that will nick well with their mare who IS pinto homozygous and then their foal WILL have the coloring they want!

It all comes down to no matter who you are you need to do some homework BEFORE you breed! You goal should be to produce the kind of horse that you like and will use. The foal should have correct conformation, a good mnd, and it should be able to DO a job and be enjoyed by you, or who ever might end up with it!
