Kathy,

We were just talking at the barn and while it's fresh on my mind... (well okay I really came to get a drink and change shoes. LOL)

Can I order this vaccine and administer it on my own? If so where would be the best place to order it?

I wouldn't mind doing this but I am afraid (my luck) that he would have a reaction or something and need veternarian assistance. Then where would I be?

Dawn and I were just chatting about it and we trust you over them!

No. You need to order it through your veterinarian. You "can" administer it yourself, but your stallion should have blood drawn and then be vaccinated immediately. This is to verify that he has not contracted the disease between the time you originally tested him and vaccinated him. It's a royal pain, but important.

Anytime you give an injection, there's the potential for a reaction regardless of what the injection is. I would suggest contacting Dr. Peter Timoney at the University of Kentucky for more information. He should be able to assist you with regards to what protocols you need to follow. He "is" the guru on EVA.

<smile>...I'm not infallible. But, there is a lot of misunderstanding about the disease. We just wrote an article in conjunction with Dr. Timoney that was submitted to Equus. Whether or not it gets published is the million dollar question, but there "is" a need for factual, detailed information about the disease. The article goes well over their word limit, so I don't know whether or not they'll publish it, but we'll see <smile>. Dr. Timoney is one of their editorial advisors so hopefully they'll view it as an opportunity to get a free article on the subject and know that it is at least co-written by the acknowledged expert on teh disease.

Hope that helps!

I told you she could tell you who you needed to talk to!

It would be nice if you could do it all yourself for not having to deal with the 'bickering' of what's best and what's correct. Oh well, that's how it works though.

Kathy, though I know little about the disease or vaccine, what you were saying just made so much more logical sense than what they were saying, it seemed obvious.

IF a stallion is gelded after he is confirmed as carrying EVA will it 'clear' him ?

If he's gelded properly and all testicular tissue is removed, he is no longer producing testosterone (some geldings will continue to behave like stallions, but that's behavioral usually). EVA requires testosterone to remain "active" in the secondary sex glands. So, yes, gelding your stallion will result in a clearance of EVA.

Hope that helps!

This was somewhat a rhetorical question for you. I do not know a EVA positive stallion, but we bought a 10 y/o un reg. stallion this past weekend (will be gelded tomorrow) and I just was wondering/wanted to be sure that once gelded that IF he had been EVA positive there would be no problem.
