Euthinization for NO reason

So I am absolutely sad and disgusted by this boarder at the barn i work at.... First off I work at a horse barn and at work today this boarder came and got one of her three horses to take home... I thought it was kind of weird that she only took one and not the other two... But apparently she couldn't afford to keep all three so instead of selling or giving the horse away she had it euthinized..,killed... for no reason this horse was 18 years old and in perfect health condition and she killed it becuase she didn't want anyone else to have it if she couldn't... This is rediculous you don't kill a horse just becuase you can't afford it there are so many people that would have loved this horse and taken it in... This is so sad and makes me so so mad just to think that someone could have the nerve to do this to an innocent animal... some people just shouldn't have horses at all

I can see the other side of this- there are a LOT of older, unwanted horses out there, and if I couldn't afford to keep my horse and he was up there in years then I might consider euthanasia if the alternative was an uncertain future. What is sadder- putting a horse to sleep peacefully while they are healthy and happy and haven't suffered, or finding out your beloved older horse has been abused/neglected/etc in a new home?

It was her horse, her choice. We can't force anyone else to make a choice they don't want to because that would be infringing on their rights to their own property. What if the horse would make her life more difficult? What if she really wanted to get ahead and the horse would hold her back. We have no right to make her keep the horse and it would be too hard to give it to someone else when she'd now be wondering how that horse is for the rest of her life.

Oh - hmmm - wait.

I'm thinking of a similar argument against abortion.

This is very different. It's a horse, not a human. Sorry.

I'm sure it's because she didn't want anyone else to enjoy the horse.

There are YOUNG horses in their prime with no one to love them right now. I think we should give the owner -- whose head we are not in -- the benefit of the doubt in that she made a very hard decision and likely did it in the best way available to her.

Wow, there are so many understanding people on this thread, but when I had my elderly gelding with SERIOUS injuries put to sleep I was flamed for it and my thread was locked. I just don't understand this forum! Yes, I think it is sad that this horse was put to sleep, but at the same time, the horse will never know suffering. The owner PAID money to make sure of that. Brave decision.

I wish there was a never-ending line of people willing to take an older horse but unfortunately, this simply isn't the way it is. I actually admire people who take personal responsibility for their horse's well being instead of running it thru the local sale for pennies on the pound (if they are lucky to get that much). Death can be a kindness to an aged horse and I think you are being much too quick to judge something when you don't know all the details. There are literally thousands of horses looking for homes right now that are much younger - an older one like her horse is much harder to place if not impossible. Just remember, in a horse's mind, they live strictly for today and not tomorrow. We humans are the only creatures who think about tomorrow.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with other posters, that is just terrible. I would/could NEVER do that. I have an older horse at 25, who HAS set me back in my life, but when I took him in when I was 15, I KNEW what I was getting myself into and I am responsible for this animal. Yes I will have to make the decision to put him down when he is ill and can't live a happy life but that is the ONLY way I will put him down.

Sure I have a nice yearling and could have another rideable great horse if it weren't for this older one BUT He is my priority and I will NOT buy another one and then go 'DOH i can't afford all this -- might aswell put down the older one' I think it's so selfish and WRONG. Yes people come into tough situations, then do what you can and atleast TRY to find a suitable home. I know a lot of my friends would try to help me out and take in a horse to prevent it from being murdered. There is no excuse in my opinion.

I had a neighbor that decided to euthanize her older Morgan gelding b/c she was moving and could not take him with her. At the time I thought it was horrible, but looking back on it I can see why she would do it

I would put my elderly Morgan mare down before I would ever give her away. At least I would know that she had a painless and dignified death.

I don't know how the market is in Indianna, where this horse was located, but here in Oregon there have been FREE younger horses on Craigslist for weeks on end. Horses that were green broke, with potential. Some registered. Not everyone can foresee financial problems. Not everyone is able to go out and find a full-time job in a jiffy. I have been searching for a job for FIVE MONTHS to no avail! The OP does not know the entire story. Did this horse have navicular? Did it have some other problem that the owner didn't feel the need to discuss with her fellow barn members? Too many judgements! It's not a matter of Quantity of life, but Quality. Did you know that ARTHRITIS HURTS? This mare may not have come into arthritis yet. She left in dignity free of pain and suffering.

Agreed. We have a 30-something Belgian, and his heart wouldn't take being thrown away again, I guaruntee it. We are also currently watching his weight something severe as if it dips too low, we will have to have him put down. Its not fair to put a geriatric draft through the winter when he can't keep weight on.
