English Saddle Question???

Ok, I don't do English but, I would like to learn. I have a qusetion that I don't know much about. If I was going to buy an English saddle what size seat do I need?? I ride in a 14 1\2 to 15 inch Western Saddle. Are they the same, or are the english saddles bigger sizes??? I feel kinda dumb but I reallt know much about english except for some lessons my mom made me take as a kid.

How tall/wide are you? By wide I mean from front to back. It really varies by what kind of saddle you're looking for too. Dressage? All purpose? Close contact? My dressage saddle is a 17".

The normal size would be a 16", I use a 17/18", but I would go sit in some at a store and find your correct size.

a 15" western saddle is the same as a 17" english saddle. So I'm guess you would be a 16"-17 1/2" . But deff. go to a tack shop and try some saddles to see your size!

I don't think Ive ever seen a local tack store that sells english. I kinda thought 17" was adverage size but I didn't know for sure. If I do get one it would just be an all-purpose saddle and I'd proably just order it. Id proably go with an in-expencive Wintec or something. I can't even imagine how much a total tack & apparel change would cost!!!! I just thought it might be fun to try because at out local shows there is usually knowbody in the English classes. I was thinking Hey, I could show and even if I got last I'd still get 3rd or 4th cause theres not but a copuple people in each class. LOL
Im thinking I might need about a 16 1/2 or 17.

16 is average, 17 is med.lg, lol. I'm 5'6/120 and use a 16 1/2" seat and a 15" western seat. Part of the diff is english is measured from the middle of the cantle (top edge) to the nail near the front corner, while westerns are measured straight from the middle of the cantle (top inner edge) to the fork or base of horn. If there's an auction around you, or any saddles in the newspaper, you might be able to try out some sizes, and find a deal. We once outfitted a guy @ Christmas with complete, bargain basement brand new Eng tack for his wife for $150. The tack was Argentine & red buffalo leather, but perfectly good & serviceable to start.. Saddle, bridle, pad, stirrups, bit, ready to roll.

I would suggest a 16"-17" . Its supposed to be add 2 numbers on to the size of your western saddle, which would make it a 16.5 ". If you order it makes sure you can return it , incase it doesnt fit your horse. Have fun

yeah i agreed your better off going to a tack store and sitting in some saddles. cause not every saddle is the same. some saddles fit some people better then others.
