English jumping?

I don't know a whole lot about English and was wondering if any of you who do ride English could answer a question of mine.

I notice in a lot of photo's and video's that when the person jumps, they look to the side. Is there a specific reason for this?

I ride western and love it, and don't think I'm going to transition to English, but I like learning about the other way of riding.

Could you post a picture of what you are seeing? I think you mean the way that the rider seems to be looking over the side of the horse??

Hmm...well, do you mean the look down to the side over the horses shoulder? Or do you mean they are looking up, but not directly ahead?

If you mean looking up, but to the side, yes there is a very specific reason for doing this lol. Usually people do that when they are riding a course and have to look towards the next jump (which you often have to turn for) in order to prepare for it.

Most people are taught to look at thier next jump when they ride. More so in jumpers, than hunters.

Maybe that's the reason... hold on, I will find a picture really quick. They're looking up, but almost all the ones I see it's over their left shoulder.

Ohh ok, well I'll wait for the pic...but since you said they are looking up, then it should be just because they are looking to the next fence.

The "left" thing is probably just a coincidence in that case

I apologize to the person whose picture I am using. I am merely using it as an example.

Maybe it's just my crazy way of thinking. Yes, I guess they're looking for the next fence. xD I just saw a commercial with jumpers and saw ther person look to the left really quick.

Looks to me that she is looking for her next fence, as was suggested above
