ENGLISH Girth Size

Ok I went to measure my gelding for a girth and what I did was tie a piece of baling twine just above the 1st hole on the billets and then brought it under the horse and tied it to just above the first hole on the other side. Then I slide the twine off the billets and measured with a tape measure. It came to 60 inches. Does this sound right? He's about 15.2 hands and has a pretty deep girth but I didn't think it was that deep. I was gonna get him a 52 inch girth but thought it was gonna be too big... did I measure wrong?

I ride my petite 16.3 TB in a 52 girth and she prolly has a smaller girth than most QHs, 60 definately sounds large, although you usually measure from the 4th hole on either side. I would say a 52 would be fine (and I may have one for sale, sorry forgot to include that in the PM)

Oh one more thing...when you measure...you said 4th hole is that the hole closest to the top of the saddle or the hole closer to the ground??? When I said 1st hole I meant the hole closest to the ground.

Four up from the bottom, shorten the measurement a little bit if you get an elastic or double elastic girth

Where you measure to depends on how long your billets are. Some billets are really long, giving you 8 holes or so. Some are shorter. You don't want to struggle to reach the first/bottom hole on either side, so ideally you want to easily be able to get to the 2nd hole with minimal tightening. How long the girth is after that depends on the billet length.

Given that, 60 sounds WAY too long for your horse unless he's just a huge tank. My WB gelding, 17h, 1300lb, takes a 60 currently because my saddle has short billets. The last saddle, with longer billets, took a 54 for him. I could go 52 with a double end elastic girth, but needed 54 with only a single elastic end.

Our former appendix 16 hands 1250# took a 50, our current Oldenburg 16.3 hands, 1467# (he was weighed at the Vet clinic) takes a 54 now, we were able to use a size 50 on him until he gained a lot of weigh/muscle. Trainer's 17.3 1600# warmblood takes a 56-58. If my daughter's saddle was not an extra long flap, then we might need to go up one size, so it is harder to get the trainer's shorter flapped saddle girthed on our horse. My AQHA, Abe 15 1 1/2 1200# took about a 50-52. A barn friend's 17+ hand 2000#+ draft cross takes a size 60 (which are really hard to find). Hope this helps.

THANK YOU EVERYONE!!! I will get him a 52 my billets arn't real long but I wouldn't say short either they have 4 holes. If the 52 is to short than I can always take it back and go longer or vice versa!
