You could try an inexpensive synthetic saddle until you can afford a leather one. Some tack stores even lend you a saddle to try out to see if you like it. You could borrow one and see if you would prefer to ride english. |

What discipline do you want to ride? (dressage, huntseat, jumpers, eventing) That will determine what type of saddle you purchase. By the way - Wintec saddles are known to make horses sore in the back due to the shape of the panels. It's much better to pay $300 and purchase another cheaper brand such as Essex or Kincade (both are real leather). The panels are properly stuffed and shaped, and Wintecs are not. [ December 30, 2003, 06:18 PM: Message edited by: Jumpers ] |

I think that the horse doesn't know what kind of saddle it has on if you ride it western or english. I dont think it really cares. I dont know if you want to show your horse or if you want to just ride and train it english. I am not sure about that. My mom and I did most of our english training in a western saddle. Just something to think about. We own a wintec saddle and we have never had any problems with scares or anything. We ride our pony in it and i dont know if that make a differnce or what.

Each individual horse is different but some horses go lame in the back and loins from the panels pressing down into the back under the rider's weight. Wintec panels are not shaped nor stuffed appropriately.

And yes - the horse DOES know what saddle is on his back. Different types of saddles allow the rider to use the seat and legs differently. An close contact saddle will allow the horse to feel the rider's seatbones much better than a big roping saddle. A Dressage saddle allows the horse to feel the rider's legs much better than an All Purpose saddle, etc. It all depends on what type of communication you want to develop with your horse. An all purpose would be wonderful for general "english" riding. You could hack, jump, etc. in an all purpose. |

I would suggest that you get an all purpose kincade. JMO though. Make sure you can return it if it doesn't work with your horse though. Also, seat sizes are different for western and english. I believe your english saddle should be 2 inches larger than your western? Or is it 2 inches smaller? Anyone know? Of course it varies from brand to brand and make to make. For instance, I'm fine in a 17 in dressage saddle. Could even go to a 16.5. But my all purpose Stubben is a 17.5. I have another all purpose saddle that's 18. So make sure it fits you too.
