Endurance Horse Breeds

I know everyone says that Arabians excel in endurance, but what other breeds have proven themselves as endurance horses? I'm looking for actual examples / stories of individual horses other then arabians.

I ride my Missouri Foxtrotter Stallion in endurance. My riding partner rides her Spanish Mustang Stallion in endurance. They do lots better than we do. They are in the top 6 of the region(6 surrounding states). We have people that ride mutts, other gaited horses, QH and Apps with us. Mostly arabs, but there are plenty of other breeds that can do endurance.

I don't know of what type of examples you want but up here in the North Eastern part of the country and up into Vermont you tend to see more Morgans then Arabs performing in competitive trail, which is very similar to endurance.

I don't know what you want in terms of specific examples but here is a picture of my mentor riding his morgan mare Lippit Miss Nekomia winning the 1942 Green Mountain 100 mile competitive trail ride. Miss Nekomia was his foundation mare. The next picture is a picture of him riding Dyberry Iva, who is Miss Nekomia's daughter, to win in the 1985 100 mile Vermont ride.

This line of Morgan is well know for their hardiness and endurance abilities. I've even over heard fables of Miss Nekomia and her offspring being so good in the endurance rides that they were banned from competition to give other horses a chance at winning. It's not true but if people were making up stories like that they must have been really good.

Gaited horses tend to do well too Brad's neighbours raise "Single Foot" horses and compete in endurance on them, they even sell quite a few down to the States to compete in it too.

Brad's aunt used to compete heavily in endurance on a Tennessee Walker, and they did quite well. They did the 50 miles rides though, not the 100. But that was more for her sake than the horse's LOL She's got a ton of prizes from it anyways.

I bought my TB/paint cross with endurance in mind. I am sure she can compete with any other horse out there.

Standardbreds are amazing horses for most disciplines and they do very well in endurance. You can find an off track horse for very little money, go to new vocations and they have off track standards for just a couple of hundred dollars. They are sound and some have been ridden. Adopt a standard.

I know this isn't "all" you want, but it is kind of fun and shows the recorded breeds in AERC: Breed Statistics

The "horse" you choose is highly dependent on WHAT you want to achieve.

I have friends that have gaited horses, that do competitive and endurance riding....I had a tbxqtr gelding that excelled in competitive trail riding....I really think it is up to the individual horse, and the amount of conditioning that the rider is willing to put on the horse....when I was competeing in long distance, it was not unusual for me to ride out on the trails 2 to 3 hours, at least 4 days a week, with a few short fast rides inbetween....not to forget to give them a day off...my typical schedule was 4 days on 1 day off...so every 5th day, no matter what day of the week it fell on, my horse had the day off...those were the days he got a super grooming and rub down...Cathy
