Endurance Horse?

For those of you that do endurance, what do you look for in an endurance horse? I have my mare listed online for sale and got an inquiry about her as a possible endurance horse. I don't know anything about endurance so I am not certain if she would be good at it or not. I told the person to come and take a look at her to see. But if I know what to look for, well I can at least tell them definitely not or maybe.

Thanks

Narrower body type over a rounder muscular type. Long lean muscles over really bulked up muscles.
Good leg bone and good feet, and preferably as correct in the legs as possible.
Some people look at breed such as Arab or half arab and the ancesters abilities in endurance. I don't since I have Appaloosa endurance horses.
Good throat latch and nostrils for breathing.
Good/decent on the trails and alot of sense.
A willingness to go on (attitude) And a good easy flowing gait.

That's what I look for. Others may have some differences.

I would be looking for a small but well musceled arab type of horse, good conformation, deep girth, good legs and good hoof....I have a friend that did a lot of endurance, and she swears that arabs excel in endurance, but there are exceptions to the rule....Cathy

Thanks so much! I never thought of endurance for this mare but she fits the description you gave except that she is not a Arab.

Although arabs are the predominant breed in endurance, they are not the only breed. The most recent Endurance News from AERC has an article on "Other breeds" doing endurance. They include horses like Appaloosas,( which are actually third in numbers behind All arab types and grades). then there are Morgans, and Tb's and QH and mules and all kinds of other breeds.

Do you have a photo of her?

Apart from the physical aspect, there's also the temperament/personality. Good endurance horses generally have laid back, easy-going personalities, the willingness to go on walking/trotting for long hours without getting bored but with enough competitive spirit to want to win/finish. But this is not something you can see just by looking at the horse. You have to try him/her out.

Here is her picture. She is Qtr. She can be laid back but definitely likes to move when given the opportunity. She prefers the trail to the arena work I have been doing with her. I just don't want to waste anyones time but at the same time, if it is something that she might be good at it might be another way to help sell her. She is too fast for the WP I wanted her to be and I got another horse to do that with.

Thanks for the help guys.
