Emergency Vet Call Tonight - Colic!

Whew! I'm so glad that I saw my horse when I did. I board and the ranch-hands had just fed the horses when I pulled up. There was food in Buddy's stall and he was laying down. I knew instantly something was wrong! A TB not eating!!! He got up and was pawing, sweating, and flipping his lip! I had my cell phone so I got my vet to come out within 20 minutes! I was a basket full of nerves, before the vet came out I was talking to my trainer and he said "pull out your emergency book from the tack shed" Geez! I completely forgot, it's just so different when it's your baby! I'm going back out tonight to give him some more medicine. The ranch I board at, feeds alfafa, and cubes. I'm so glad I went out there when I did, why didn't the ranch-hands catch it....

I agree, why didn't the ranch hands catch it. You may want to address that with the owner, or the supervisors. I know that when I feed, it is religious that all three horses will have their little heads poking out of their stalls, they are ready and waiting. If the ranch hands didn't notice that your horse did not do that, they should have inquired about it.

I guess there is a possibility that your horse was not down at that moment, but I would still check into it just incase. I mean, you pay these people to keep an eye on your horse. It is your responsibilty to keep him healthy, but they should be more alert to changes in his eating patterns etc.

I am glad that your boy is okay, please keep us posted as to the outcome.

Lynda

gas-x baby.

Will save you a fortune treating gas related colic. Doesn't harm the horse if you give it and it's impaction colic. Give one tablet per 100 pounds of horse, and you're good to go.

the only time that i've ever had a colic scare, it was my yearling, and it was gas colic. I mashed up gas-x, mixed it with water, dosed him orally in a syringe. started to walk and within 30 minutes he was pooping. was a great sight.

glad that your baby is ok!

Gas x? Wow, never heard of that before. I will have to look into that further, as I am suprised that I hadn't heard it on here before either.

Very interesting, thank you.

No problem. I hadn't heard of it either, but a friend from FL has a horse who gas colics about every other week.

It was her vet who recommended it. As it won't harm the horse, I give it at the first signs of colic, just to be safe

That's good to know. I will have to buy some to have on hand, for those just in case times.
