"Strangely enough there were only two things my vets said NOT to use on her (although they are perfectionists in wound treatment) and they were any form of furacin or wonderdust. The reason for no furacin, it promotes proudflesh on lower legs, and wonderdust (while it works great!) actually treats the healthy flesh the same as proudflesh and can increase scarring."

That's wierd, my vet recommended putting the frracin on to keep it moist. Hhhhmmmmm.....

Are you using a good equine-specialist vet?

If you are hoping to be able to ride this mare, I would totally be getting a second or even third opinion from vets who specialized in performance horses and is up to date on all the research in the field. This is NOT something for the jack-of-all-animals vets. If it's that bad, I'd be considering taking her to a university or hospital. I know cost is always an issue, but it sounds serious enough to warrant it

I think when Static had that horrible hock injury, Probarrelracer took him to their university hospital until they got him out of the woods, then they taught her how to care for and dress the wound.

When my WB gelding severed his extensor tendon (that's the one that runs down the front of the legs), I used a combination of a nobow bandage, a track wrap, a roll of the brown gauze, and vetrap to make a very sturdy soft "cast". It didn't eliminate fetlock joint motion, but really minimized it.

Stall rest and bandaging with a "robert jones" bandage is also an option.

Pretty much any form of wound cream/steriod cream will keep it moist. I know we went with a green wound cream first (anti-biotic cream) and then transitioned to a dermabase mix. We only just moved to a spray in the last two weeks.

Your bandgang looks good! SHe is actually keeping her leg pretty straight on her own now, it hasnt even been a week, but she isnt hopping on it , she is almost limping now. She gets it flat on the ground and puts weight on it. I even see her resting the good foot on it! But there is still a long way to go. She still has a 4" x 2" wound now where the bone is showing. SO, I am trying to keep that from getting infected now.

Keep the faith. My guy had a hole about that size when he injured himself - he slid into the bottom of a t-post

IMHO, you should REALLY consider having a wrap done like mine to keep that fetlock joint stable enough for a while. One complication that Rio developed very early on is that he didn't get his foot planted flat one step and he knuckled over, tearing the fetlock joint capsule.

The extensor tendon is the tendon to sever if you're going to do something there. Rio did his almost 6 years ago, and it's been fine since it healed.
