Smile Embarrassed to ask -- but I will

Okay.... ...here goes....the basics..turning right and left...rein and leg position..should you always have contact? We are trotting along and need to be turning left soon...I know my mare has it in her head to go right...I use inside rein and inside leg ? Am I correct? I'm using split reins with a snaffle bit but sitting on a Western saddle. Any comments are much appreciated...thank you

Snaffle bits you direct rein. You can also neck rein to help teach how to turn on a neck rein for future use.

To turn to the right, you pull the bit to the right, use your left leg and move it slightly forward to the girth but not in front of the girth. Squeeze or nudge there. This helps teach lateral movements as well.

To turn Left. Everything i said, opposite sides!!

Yup same as BW. But ive been taught that if the horse responds better to inside rein inside leg you can also do that. But just make sure you arent doing outside leg behind and inside rein or you will have a sideways-going and slightly confused horse haha

ive been told to turn either way its obviously pull on that rein and have your inside leg behind the girth and your outside leg on the girth

That too. I had to quit using my inside leg for a while until I learned how to use my outside legs. The inside is to help "wrap" the ribs in the turn and keep the shoulder from dropping during a turn. (more for barrels, but even on circles as well)

If you use direct rein with snaffle bits...what's the other option? Indirect and which bit would you use. When you say direct rein what exactly is that....

Hmm..I've been taught differently. My dressage trainer tells me to use my inside leg to create the bend, and my outside leg, slightly further back than the inside, to guard the outside shoulder/hind to keep the circle/turn from getting larger. Really, I guess I try to do as little with the reins as possible during a turn or circle. Just keep the outside rein steady to maintain pace and keep the outside shoulder where I want it and use the inside rein to keep him supple and enhance the bend (without turning his head in too much).

I'm using a french link snaffle and dressage saddle.

Everyone already to seem be helping you, so I don't think I need to explain as everyone else did.

My baby respond better at weight shifting and leg cues. I can hope on my gelding with saddle, bit, halte..I mean NOTHING. And use my weight shift and legs. If I look and move my shoulder to the left, there he goes.

Angry I'm mad at myself -- please help

If anyone has seen some of my posts, you can guess that I'm new to the riding scene. I'm mad with myself...I just finished riding my mare in the paddocks and we were going to go to the barn to finish up for the night. She has to go through a gate to get to the barn...she did not want to go through the gate!!! There a lot of trees in this particular area but enough room to move. So I took her a few different ways to get through the gate (about 5 times) but she would have no part of it. I eventually dismounted and lead her in. I kept her in crossties for a little longer than usual. My husband thinks I should have just waited until she finally did what I wanted her to do but I had another problem. My saddle had shifted so I was off balance (one of the reasons for cutting our session short) so my balance was already off. WHAT SHOULD I HAVE DONE?? -- Help and why does my saddle keep sliding sideways? She's cinched up enough so it's not that it's loose. She was also in a fiesty mood tonight. She didn't listen well to whoa's but eventually did, I would back her up and kept doing it until she did it right. Any suggestions on any of my techniques will help! Thanks a bunch and sorry it's so long....I still have my riding gear on while I'm posting this OH.....ONE MORE THING.....From a walk to a trot ....she goes to a canter.....which I'm not asking her for.....My inexperience is coming through.....
