My BO mostly feeds it to keep weight up, as would I. So any other benefits would be a side bonus.

Then you need to find a feed that's designed to be fed at the levels that you need to feed it at.

As far as the stablemate, I'm not sure of the nutritional value of almond hulls? Does anyone have any insight on that?

One thing that kind of makes me go 'huh' about this feed line is that they use some very interesting feed ingredients. Not necessarily a bad thing. But things I've never heard of being fed to equines or having any particular nutritional value for equines. Something to research before feeding it definately.

Looking at this feed, it's designed basically (if not completely) as a hay stretcher type product. Will not provide a balanced ration in and of itself. Just more along the lines of an alfalfa pellet that's not an alfalfa pellet (if that makes any sense at all).

I just started feeding alfalft/out cubes, so it sounds like I would be feeding two things that are much the same. I have a hard time finding something that suggest feeding a small amount, except Enrich, I believe that is like only 2 or 3 lbs a day? I'm not sure as I have not fed it at all.

Suggest feeding a small amount as in that is what the directions on the back of the bag say to feed. Sorry if that was confusing!

You have access to Purina and LMF right? What other brands (aside from this one).

And yes, you're basically feeding two forage products. My personal opinion of course, but I would much prefer to see someone feeding hay cubes or pellets along with a supplemental feed that provides high quality nutrition rather than feeding a 'hay extender' type product.

I am pretty sure stable mix is simply a complete feed, you can feed in place of hay

i won three bags of it at a show one time. it is a alfalfa/oat/forage pellet with added vitamins
the lady who redeemed my free bags prize certificate said it could be used either way...complete feed or supplement. i simply used it as treats for the horses

LMF and Purina are the only feeds that my local feed stores carry, and only some the feeds that those brands carry. I am feeding alfalfa cubes to my mare because she needs the extra weight from the alfalfa and I like that the cubes stay confined. I was under the impression from my BO that the Elk Grove stable mix was comparable to Equine Senior (maybe not as good but to far off either), but I don't think she has researched it that much.
She also feeds it to put weight on, whereas I am looking for a feed to help suppliment my horses since they are not out on pasture.
As of right now I am still feed Equine Senior (I don't know why, none of my horses are seniors, I guess because it was the best thing for getting weight on my mare, and so I just stuck with it), but am considering switching to Enrich, LMF or Elk Grove (but am seeing that that is probably not the best choice for me).

What exactly are your horses getting right now?

The Stable mix is kind of comparable to Equine Senior. It's a fortified complete feed. But really, the Stable Mix is actually more of a direct comparison to Purina Horse Chow. Which can be fed as a complete feed, but is more useful simply as a forage replacement.

My mare gets two flakes of oat hay twice a day (that she shares with my two mini's, how they manage to stay so fat I don't know). In the morning she gets fed 2 pounds of Equine Senior (we are switching over to Equine Adult today) and 2 pounds of rice bran. I had been feeding roughly 5 to 10 pounds of Alfalfa Oat cubes in the morning as well (again shared with the two mini's) because I think she still needs some alfalfa, but I stoped over the weekend because she wasn't eating anything but her grain (it was a difficult weekend, she broke out in hives, has been super sensitve to the flys, has trouble breathing in the heat wave, and had one of her breathing episodes where she can't breath because her airways are paralized, so she was in shock for a little while one sat and so I gave her mash) I am thinking of keeping my mare on Equine Adult or Enrich, and putting the mini's on the Elk Grove to get some extra suppliments, but they don't need as much as the mare. Oh and I will be bringing home a new Morab on Thursday and she will be in training for endurance, so she will be a whole new feeding challange. I wish I had grass!!! I wouldn't be feeding all this stuff if they could just get some good grass!!
