| Senior Member | Electrolyte question......
ok so i'm **guessing** Coco weighs 1500 lbs....and the instructions on the bucket of Electrolytes say to give her 2 oz. in her bucket and there's a little scoop in there...how many scoops do you guys suggest (i'm not sure her weight has anything to do with it, but just in case it does, i thought i would throw that information in)? and another question.......i've heard horses can safely carry 10% of their weight on their backs....my dad says its 20%. Who is right? (what i mean is, at what point do you get too heavy to ride your 1500 lb. horse without hurting their back) and ANOTHER question......keep in mind that i've never ordered anything new for Coco personally, it's always my parents that do it...i think it may be time to get Coco a new bareback pad. For that, i would need to know how much she weighs, right? anything else i would need to know?

FOr a bareback pad? Don't need to know how much the horse weighs....just the girth size from what I understand... As for electrolytes, my horse is 1000 lbs, I give a tiny BIT of the scoop since he is also on a pre-mixed feed. (that and he floods his stall with urine if I add any more) As for the weight, it is 15 - 20% of their body weight, MIND YOU this includes tack.

Cowgirl, I give my 1000 lb QH a scoop of electrolytes. I would seriously weigh your horse, 1500lb sounds like a lot, unless he is a super duper huge halter horse Ditto BW on the bareback pad. And usually, they only come in hrose or pony size. No choices on girth sizes there. The girth is actually a web strap, which you can cut to go smaller

I really have never seen a human being too large to ride a 1500 pound horse. I would imagine that maybe the incredible Hulk might be pushing the line (lol). I would try a weight tape. My horse is 16.1 and VERY large. He has a little trouble squeezing into my slant load trailer, and he only weighs 1365 pounds. (used a scale at the feed store). I usually give one scoop per day of electrolytes. My horse loves to drink anyway, so dehydration has never been an issue.

Probarrel, Have to agree on the weight issue. If a person was too large to ride a 1500 pound horse, that person would probablly not be able to get on in the first place!
