Red face Elastic release stirrups?

So, I recently changed trainers and anyone who has ever gone through it knows that some things have to change. One thing that my new trainer wants me to do is to buy those emergency release stirrups with the elastic outer piece. I have ridden in them before but I don't know if I like them(: Does anyone have any ideas? Should I buy them? Should I keep my old faithfuls? Anyone know anything about them? Please and thank you!

I think they feel funny! I always ride in boots a size-and-a-half too big. If I fall off. My stirrup can just keep the boot, but me and my leg will stay in tact, thank you very much!

I don't like those stirrups. Some of the saddles at my old lesson barn had them on and there just wasn't enough support. One time in a near fall my foot hit the outside of the stirrup and the elastic just popped off if that had been a "real" stirrup it wouldn't have been a problem. If you want a safety stirrup I perfer the kind with the curve on the outside branch of the iron. There is even a kind now that is a hidden safety release.

These are the curved safety stirrups I was talking about....

Foot Free™ Stirrups - Dover Saddlery

And here are the hidden safety stirrups. Quite a bit pricier but they look nicer......

Kwik-Out Stirrups - Dover Saddlery

One other thing about the elastic keeper stirrups is that because they don't have two metal sides it stresses the metal and they can bend and break under stress. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of the things. That's why I like the curved safety stirrups better.

They're only safe under a certain weight limit as well. Can't remember the exact number, but it is relatively low.

Seriously. I wear an 8, but ride in a 9 1/2 or a 10. I have a fear of being drug to death by a runaway train with a mane and tail!

same here...i like the hidden ones, and the curved ones are ok, but i dont trust them to keep you on and you can get ur foot caught in those, but not the release ones u were talking about - their proper name is "peacock stirrups" if i know wat ur talking about

use whatever type stirrups u feel more comfertable in!

Peacock stirrups are the ones the OP was talking about.

I use them on my jumping saddle, and I love them. We were on the trail the other day and Roxy had a HUGE spook at a concrete thing on the side of the road, thanks to those stirrups, I came right out of the saddle and landed on my feet and was able to react alot faster because the rubber band released. Just keep extra leather pieces and rubber bands on hand, and you shouldn't have a problem with them comming off.
