Ebony Update - holding off

Wow. I just got the following update from the repro clinic where Ebony is. I checked my records and last year, she showed this change two days before foaling.

She is currently at day 303.

She delivered Deb fully cooked last year at day 314. But 11 days is a lot. Jeeze louise. Someone tell that mare to be more patient.

Just giving another update. In the last 24 hours Ebony's udder has greatly increased in size; in fact it is pretty full and tight right now. Because she had such a great increase in size I milked a little fluid out of her to check it (the first time I've tried since she has been here). It was the color of skim milk, which was a little suprising to me as generally they don't get to that stage until they are within 2-3 days of foaling. I think she is going to go early again this year, but I hope that she holds out for at least another two weeks. I will let you know if anything else changes.

if she foals within the next 2 days surely 9 days early wouldn't put foal at too much of a risk? i'm sure she and the foal will be fine.

Oh no. Will the foal be viable this early?

My fingers are crossed for you both ( three). Usually before day 310 they abort but you have a tough mare and we'll pray for full term or close to it. Hang in there and be strong keep an update if here anything. Last foal she delivered early or showed signs of?

She needs those thoughts! I think now she's foaled once at the clinic, she's like "okay, I'm at the baby place, I'm in the baby stall. Let's get this done so I have have some baby cookies!" Clearly misunderstanding the point!!

I did *a lot* of reading last night. Usually foals delivered 310-320 are iffy and foals delivered 300-310 are critical. But we know this mare has a "normal" gestation significantly shorter (by several weeks) than the average mare, so I'm really think/hope even if she foaled without delay it would have a pretty good chance. Last year her day 314 baby had a normal full foal coat and totally normal ears (lacking those would be the outward signs of a foal premie)

Where did you read that? I didn't come across that info last night. I did read that if they go through normal pre-labor (bagging, dropping, waxing, relaxing) over the course of several days there is every reason to expect a live viable foal.

I'm trying not to worry too much. (yeah right) She just about couldn't be in a better place and I know if she shows any signs at all that these early signs are being caused by placentesis or something that they'll treat it aggressively. And if she does pop it out sooner rather than later having her at the clinic gives the baby a really, really good chance.

Thank you for your thoughts, guys. I wish you could all hold my hand.

I have no foaling experience, but I *read* seasoned mares can show signs way early. Is there a chance that is happening?
