Dyeing your tack?????

Hey, what do you all think about dying the color of your tack... like for instance.. I have a white english saddle pad:

and I want to dye it blue with fabric dye. Would it cause any irritation to my horse?

I think it would depend on the type/brand of dye.

if you washed it a few times first, i'd imagine all the extra dye would of been washed out (like hair) and then you can use it!

I don't think that I would dye a blanket. Even if it is washed a few times, I bet it will run when the horse sweats, or rub off on you or your saddle.

Yeah, I was thinking that. But I've never used fabric dyes before lol. I've heard of washing is a couple times before useing it a lot so far from other people not on HGS.

Dyeing fabric if done correctly will not run with sweat or if it gets wet again. Is the pad 100% cotton? If yes it will be very easy to dye. If it is synthetic you need to get a acid dye (not bad like it sounds; it's just a name) to dye the synthetic fibers. Heres a link for acid dyes: http://www.dharmatrading.com/html/eng/1344-AA.shtml

Another trick I have learned is to ad a cup of salt to the dyebath; the salt helps to set the color. Then you rinse it in cold water to help set it more and then you are done!

I actually came online to ask if anyone has ever dyed their halters before. I have a Monty Robers Dually Halter which I love but I hate the color blue (it matches nothing I have!). So has anyone ever dyed them? I was thinking of trying a really strong bath of black acid dye on it...

i've seen it done on a friends, she used a mild dye, and washed it quite a few times, and then used it, she rides a light palomino, and it never bled (Hot pink)

Hmm, that's interesting. Do you think the dye's are safe for horses? My horse is so sensative, I would think that it would irritate him.

Thats what I'm worried about shotgun. Since a saddle pad takes up a large portion of the horses back, would it really be safe?
