Dyeing my Horses Tail

My horse has a dark gray tail at the top, but at the end of his tailbone, it turns to a gorgeous, platinum white. Therefore, his tail is 1/2 grey 1/2 white. The problem with this is that I show Hunter Under Saddle, and I need to get a fake tail. Not only can I not afford a white tail extension, but it also looks very fake. My trainer suggested dyeing his tail the dark grey, to match his mane and so that all his tail will blend. Has anyone ever dyed their horses tail? She said if I didn't want to dye it to get Shapley's Touch Up and spray the tail grey, and then I could wash it out. What do you guys think?

What color is your horse? I'm just trying to picture how this would look...

And why can't you have a two-color tail for HUS? I don't show so I'm just wondering.

My horse is a medium gray. He used to be a red roan, but he has lightened considerably with age, so he still a small amount of red in him. Right now, his tail looks like it was really short and gray, and we added a white extension. It looks fake. If I were to get a white extension, people will think that i added in all white rather than just making it thicker. I am also looking for a cheaper extension. The difference between a white and a grey one is $100 or more. another problem is because the grey doesn't run all the way through. It's grey, and then white, no blend.

my trainer had a girl that showed a big grey guy, who had the same problem... They used a dye from a grocery store, I believe they used two things of it, and she dyed his tail just like you would dye someone's hair, she got it wet, sectioned it off, applied the dye, let it sit for required time, and rinsed out.

We are actually going to be dying one of our horses tails this summer for show as well. He is a beautiful bay, but his mane and tail bleach out SO bad in the summer....almost this sick **** color! LOL So yeah, I would try it...I'd go for the wash out kind I think.

I'd use the stuff that will wash out, my trainers horse had his tail dyed when she bought him and ended up having to let it grow out to its natural color bc having to dye it before almost every show was a pain. Then for the longest time she had a horse w/ half a black tail and half pure white. But if you just spray it and you can wash it out you'll be able to let it grow out into its new color w/o him looking funny.

I dye my bay horses tails black several times a year. Works great.

Never tried it on a gray. Try a washable color and see how it looks. If you don't like it, it will go away.

Be VERY careful even with the "wash out stuff"!!!! Being a hairstylist, I can't begin to tell you the amount of times I've had clients come in after having used home, semi-permanent colors, kool-aid, and food coloring that ends up being permanent colors on their previously light colored hair!!! Also be careful in finding a grey to match. I don't know what your show rules are, but in the Arab world, we can't use dyes, spray coloring or anything like that. Good luck!!!!
