Dun mare

I've got the foal bug!

That's what happens when I come here to read the foal threads every day, thanks alot folks! Spring can't come soon enough now.

I figured I'd post some shots of the little dun who should be due in May. Her trainer/stud owner said she was exposed to the stud "in June". The stud is registered QH but mare is grade so she didn't keep better track of the exact dates they were together since the foal couldn't be registered anyhow. I'll try to post regular updated photos so I have a bit of a timeline and can get some comments on her weight and size, just to have more of an idea about when she might be due.

Thanks!

Before we got her, likely late spring, right before being bred.

Early November.

Early December.

Mid-December.

Late December.

"Docs A Major Hankins"

He's a bay with a great personality (I've been told, never actually saw him in person) but I am sure he's never been shown or 'proven' himself in any discipline. Not the best choice for a stud but I had nothing to do with that, ha ha. With any luck though the foal will be easy to work with since the mare is a dream to handle too, and maybe get a bit of color to boot! Currently I have no plans to keep the foal--I don't have the patience to wait years and years to ride--but who knows!

Since the mare is a maiden mare there is no way to guess on foaling date with more information... LOL You cannot tell just by looking at them. I had a mystery foaling date because I did not know the date of the second breeding I waited until September for that offspring. It was easy enough to prove parentage once the foal was on the ground. The sire was obvious.
Your mare looks healthy and happy so now you just get to wait. She still looks to be six months or so off...

Thanks for that information HHF--don't know your "real" name, sorry! The woman who owned him when my mare was bred traded him to another woman for a couple young horses this fall and I see he's up for sale again. I guess that's just the horse business but I do feel sad that he doesn't get to settle in anywhere. Maybe he doesn't care though as long as there are some ladies around, ha ha!

Whoa, whoa, whoa! SIX MONTHS? I'm pretty sure I can't wait six months! I'll go bananas waiting THAT long! Here I am, looking at her every day thinking "jeepers, this horse might give birth to an elephant baby!" I would swear she is getting wider by the day! Oh man, this is going to be a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong winter.

Thanks Mary!

I have to admit I didn't research the stud (or the sellers) before accepting the trade--I just wanted to get rid of my husband's horse before I lost all my courage around horses in general. I did get lucky and end up with a heck of a sweet, well broke mare who should have a decent foal but it could have turned out to be a terrible deal. I recently came across a thread about the dreaded Trina Kenney and realized exactly how lucky I was.

The other night I emailed the stud's current owner and she seems very friendly. I contacted her to ask the stud's height, just out of curiousity, and to see if this foal might be taller than Mama. Probably not by much, ha ha, the stud is only 14.3 (approx.) too. Oh well, still should be a stunner of a baby.
