Dubies new bit

He seems to like it and also loves the copper roller in it. Here, I think he likes the pipe corral because he's licking it like a lollipop!

Should I get those rubber guards in case it tends to pinch?

Is your horse trained to go in a curb? What kind of bit is it exactly?

This is the bit. He has been using a curb since I got him and before that. My trainer/instructor helped choose what they thought would be a good choice with him. What's your take on this bit?

It looks like a walker bit. My personal opinion, it's not necessary. All you do with him is trail ride? Correct? All he needs is a nice soft snaffle. This type of bit (really any type of curb but this one in particular) is meant for more advanced work, cuing, etc...

Dawn, I had him in a snaffle and he seemed very confused with it. He is a Tennessee Walker and I know sometimes that walkers are started pretty quickly in curbs.

If he was mine (which he very well isn't and you can take that into whatever consideration you want), I would take him back to a snaffle and train him to go in one properly.

It's hard to tell from the pic and it might be my imagination, but it looks like that halter's causing the shanks to rotate. That will interefere with your communication with him and also possibly pinch his lips. Not sure if you normally leave the halter on or not, but I would consider taking it off in this situation.

No, the halter is taken off when he gets ridden.

1- Probably b/c he hasn't been trained to respond in a snaffle. The cues feel very different to them and they need to be trained for what they mean. 2- Walkers can go in snaffles, too. A friend of mine even had her friend's Paso Fino gaiting, in frame, within an hour on nothing more than a simple snaffle... even on a loose rein. All it takes is some training.

Do you neck rein or direct rein?
