Dry Mane and Tail

Well, my gelding has a very dry mane and tail. Its not like there full of dandruff or anything it just feels ruff and dry like straw. When he gets a bath I usually just rinse condition rinse and then leave it. I shampood his mane and tail about two weeks ago, and only after this did his mane feel soft and fluffy. I loved the affect but I definatly dont want to strip the oils.
What do I do? His mane is worse then his tail, its getting to the point where his hair just breaks off?

Thanks for any help

Coconut oil!

Do a search on it.

I'd suggest (unless absolutely necessary) just using conditioner to wash his tail.

What conditioner are you using? If it has a lot of silicones in it, it may being doing more harm than good.

Could also be a dietary deficiency. Tisd often comes out first in hair and feet

You might want to consider giving him a supplement for both his feet and his hair coat(manes and tails)....I'm using "Grand Hoof" to improve the hoof quality on my horses and its done a beautiful job. Manes and tail quality are also vastly improved. We live on the high desert and dry manes and tails are common here. I use Cowboy Magic and Mane and Tail on both horses and it's done wonders...I put it on after shampooing and do not rinse it out.

MTG is meant to be used at the roots to encourage growth? Not put through the whole mane...

I would have to go with the diet theory, first. Make sure your horse is getting plenty of the essential amino acids, and a balanced vit/min profile. If that's fine, then I would agree that a hoof and coat supplement might be in order. Preferably one with flax.

How are his hooves? Is it just the mane and tail that are affected?
