Dry Hooves, Solution?

Not sure if this sould go in this section or not.
Anyways....

Here lately our horses hooves have been really dry, and are starting to crack and chip. We have had weather where its really humid and dry for a while, then it will rain for a while. So its heither bone dry or very muddy(in parts) out in the pastures. Our horses hooves are trimmed on a regular basis. Is there anything else that we can do to help keep them from cracking and starting to chip?

Thanks in advance for the replies!

You could get a good hoof dressing that would probably help some. That is what my farrier had me do. I used hooflex from absorbine

I would use a a hoof dressing. The thing is that you want to make sure it doesn't have alcohol or terpentine in it. These two things are in just about all hoof dressings but they dry the hoof out which is what you don't want, why they put it in them I don't know. One that works really well and is all natural is hooflex hoof oil dressing.

Get you some Cornucrescine. I paid $20.00 for a large jar & it lasts about a year, even using it everyday. It's REALLY good stuff!

Crazi I have been unable to find that stuff in the US. I did get a small jar of it, but it cost me $30 after shipping and it only lasted like on month,.

I think hoof dressing would do the trick. I use Rain Maker on Sugar. It works really well. She had that problem a few weeks ago. I think the Rain Maker helped a lot.

I have the oppositte problem here its too muddy!!!!

But I know some years at the horse club here it was really really dry, so people would dump buckets and buckets of water around the horses water troughs so it would get muddy and wet and then everytime the horses went to drink they would have to put there hooves in the water. They seemed to think it really helped as long as you kept the area around the water trough wet!

i'm an aussie so i dont know what products you have over there.

but id like to point out that any hoof oil should be applied around the coronet band and not the lower part of the hoof, and NEVER to the sole of the hoof. oil will only help the NEW hoof growth, not the already damaged hoof. i use "world's best hoof oil" and every aussie recommends it. either that or "Effol".

feeding a biotin supplement (while sometimes expensive) can help to produce stronger new hoof growth.your local produce store will be cheaper than the saddlery and you can buy in bulk too.
