Dressage show question

This is super embarrassing but at my dressage show today I got a comment from the judge that I salute wrong

My instructor was confused as well as she thought I was fine.

Could someone explain the minutiae of saluting?

Put both reins in the left hand, lower your right hand toward your thigh, and drop your head. Don't rush through, give it a second or two after you halt before you salute and a second to collect yourself before your trot out from your halt.

How are you saluting?

Edit - oops...I'd typed lower your left hand, lower your right hand. Can't hold the reins and drop your hand all at the same time.

Wait, you put the reins in your left hand then use that same hand to bring it down to your thigh? I thought you were supposed to put the reins in one hand, then take the other and touch it quickly to your helmet, then bring both your head and the hand you used to touch your helmet down? And then you keep the hand you used to touch your helmet straight and stiff right?

I put reins and whip in left hand, used right hand to touch helmet and bring hand past thigh and nod head.

I am thinking touching the helmet is the wrong part?

Or maybe I can't use the right hand?

Touching the helmet is the wrong part. That is actually begging off the jump off in the jumper world.

Wow I am so surprised! I have ALWAYS been taught to touch the helmet...well, that was when I was an eventer. Now that I think of it, I do remember my current dressage instructor telling me not to touch my helmet and to just bring the hand/arm straight down. Everything in my left hand, then I bring the right hand down.

Yup, reins in your whip hand, drop the other hand down to your thigh, and bow your head down...but look dignified! I used to slouch and when I saw the vid I looked like a diving duck or something! =P
