That's odd that you were taught that as an eventer, because I don't do any straight dressage, and I've always been taught to simply drop the hand not holding the whip (after putting the reins in the whip hand, of course )

This conjures up memories of that adorable "army salute" scene in the eventing movie, "Sylvester"

Agreed, my trainer is a judge. Taught me to just drop my hand, just down and a little out- no up.

Jump, reins and whip into the left hand and salute with the right.

Don't do what I did. I was riding Sparks in a dressage practice day and in the final halt, she tried to snatch the reins out of my hands, so halfway through saluting, I changed my mind and slapped her across the neck. The pony stood to attention and I saluted red-faced. The judge commented "Nice salute"
