| Senior Member+ | Dressage people - Is this too much $ for lessons...
I am looking to take some Dressage lessons on schooled horses. The one farm of most interest (Classical Dressage) offers a 45 minute lesson on a 1st level horse for $100. Is this too much $ or is it to be expected for what you get??

If this IS a properly schooled horse ( at medium level or above) capable of flying changes, all lateral movements, collection and extensions then it is within reason. I personally would not pay that price for any lesson on a horse below that level.

If it is really a 1st level horse, then I think that is a fair price. {Edit} May I ask were you are interested in taking lessons at? Because I'm interested in taking some dressage lessons. Either way, I'm going to have to travel pretty far, because dressage isn't that big here. If you don't want to say on here, can you PM me? Thanks

The last time I took Classical Dressage lessons was when I lived in NY (2000). The lessons were $25 on my horse. It wasn't "regimented" really... like this is training level or 1st level... it was more like this is what my horse needed to work on... like straightness or working forward but not rushing. My Mr. Ed, This one is in Gordsonville, VA and I just found one in Culpeper, VA this morn... I need to contact them for Prices. I'll PM the websites to you... |

It really depends on several factors. *Qualtiy of facilities *Quality of "school" horse *Credentials of Instructor (experience, knowledge, etc) However, its not worth anything if you don't learn anything, or you don't learn what you wanted to. A trainer this expensive should be VERY good at his/her job. That means, they UNDERSTAND what you need/want and are able to deliver. |

Thanks, I just want to know for future reference. Don't have the money right now. I don't think there will be any places that have such lessons close to me. I live in Heathsville, VA. About 65 miles outside of Richmond.

That seems fairly reasonable I guess. High for my region though. I just took lessons with a olympic team rider that flew in from Canada and those were $80 on one of her horses, $50 on your own. But, like Cowgirl said, you want to check the credientials, the ability and skill of the horses, the reputation.

In my opinion that's not really that high. It will dpend on a lot of factors like CowGirlUp1833 said, but I've found that out in the eastern US it is MUCH more pricey. Around here it can range from 45-80 $ an hour. And a little further south it's cheaper. But I would still look around for the best deal...

I think thats too much too...I ride a 4th level horse for nothing!! But, I think that $50.00 for an hour would be appropriate...

There's a woman up here that rides GP Dressage. She doesn't teach the public but my sister used to work at her barn and she would give her lessons for $80 on my sister's horse. She learned so much that she only had to get a lesson once a month.
