I really reccomend the book Dressage from A to X (by Barbara Burkhardt). It's excellent - as in it explains everything about dressage and showing very well. No training methods or anything, but when you're done with it you'll know exaclty how Dressage (like the levels and such) works and exaclty what's expected of you and your horse at each level.

yeah, it's great...it really does cover everything you'll find in the competitive world, even if you're just doing schooling shows or higher levels.

Just a few hints from a novice perspective-

Even if it says coats aren't required, wear a coat. It shows respect for the judge. Braid your horse, too, unless it specifies NOT to. Avoid polo wraps and boots, they are usually illegal in schooling shows too. Um... relax, breathe, and go in there like you are schooling your horse- it is a SCHOOLING show. I know that it's been said many times but seriously, take it easy and have fun.

Good luck.

Aaaaameeennn. Even when it's hot out - just don't put your jacket on until you're riding into the arena. Paints such a better picture, plus, at bigger shows...it looks nicer in the photos, too.
