Personally i think drafts have a lot of options with them. Of course they may never be the fastest barrel runner or the highest jumper but you drive, ride any style, trail ride, jump, etc... plus the showmanship (from what i've heard) is so much easier! lol. I am in now way putting down other horse breeds of course because all horses are great but i do love drafts : ] (which is really ironic because i'm really show)

I think they'd make an awesome barrel horse, just the sight of it

Yeah i can just imagine that! I think drafts are so sweet plus that'd be just so fun to see all the people look at you like what the heck? when you take your draft to a barrel show : P of course not a serious one, just a fun show! It really sounds fun!

Shes my mare. And thank you very much!

I didn't show this year, but last year and two years before that I did (missed the one between because Clump decided to loose 1/3 of her hoof, making her lame for 18 months ).

I was going to show at Erin this year (As its just down the road!!) but I had to work unfortunately. Clump actually came from Fenlin falls (sp?) which isn't too far from Lindsay at all! But I showed at Orangeville, milton, and georgetown previously at the heavy shows.

And for those wondering about barrels?
She runs a clean 17 second run.

Yeah, my boy (Spotted Draft) eats a scoop of sweet feed every day and then free choice hay/grass.

A lot of the drafts in the barn just get a scoop or two of food a day (sweet feed, high fat, or a mix, depending) and hay. So not really that much more than a "regular" horse. Of course, none of them are in heavy work so I'm not sure how much a difference that'd make.

EDIT: Also, I want to take my boy team penning some day.

In the meantime, we just do local schooling shows on the flat. And lots of trail rides.

I show my Clydesdale in everything including jumping, contesting, team penning, etc... Here is a video of my sister showing him, she wanted to borrow him for a 4H show

I have shown Perchernons in pleasure driving at a local fair. It was with someone elses horses , but I was amazed at teh different attitude of the draft people. It was like all the draft horse competitors were best friends, even the ones who didn't know each other. Everyone helped everyone else out, woulsd sit and have coffee together after all the classes were done. There was a really friendly atmosphere that I have never found with the light horse people.

The "light" horse that I show in jumping and english flat classes, and gymkahanas is a Clydesdale x Thoroughbred. I love him because the has the TB energy and speed, but that calm, well thought out, unflappable Clyde mind. I absolutely love draft crosses. You just can't beat the temperament, and that incredible willingness. He's only 4 years old, and I can put him in any situation that he's never even seen before, and he's just as cool as can be.
