Draft and Pony breeding

My last started thread on this was shut down, and I was disappointed because I had NOT duplicated the thread, as they said. I am only curious and wanted to know the answer to my question.

My pony, Sierra, is a 5 year old, liver chesnut, spirited 13.3 HH pony mare. She has good conformation and disposition but I think with a calmer, taller stallion, the foal would turn out to be remarkable. Does anyone know if breeding a pony with a draft horse such as a Noriker, Percheron or any other one, is safe? What about a friesian? Thanks!

I wouldnt say a draft/pony cross was a great idea. if you want a taller stallion go with a quarter horse then you can register the foal as a quarter pony, and it will still be a light enough horse to have a chance of being competitive in most spheres.

Why not look at a 'draft type' small horse? Maybe not necessarily a pony, but not a big huge draft horse?

Bizarre... (my word of the evening)

I once had a spirited 5 year old 13.3hh liver chestnut mare named... you guessed it... Sierra

She got lost in the bush when someone left the gate open. Her and her foal never returned.

I would think a 13.3h pony breed to a 17h draft, would have problems. There is a possibility of a big baby in a little momma. I'd Talk to your vet. One option... Haflingers draft ponies and can be found around 15 - 15.3h. Just a thought.

keep in mind that the foal could inherit mamma's spirited ways. i think i heard foals are 80% more like their dam

and i agree with GrayArab.

Halflingers are great drafty types. they are normally 14.2 and under but there are the occasional tall ones(but those ones cant be registered) but they make awesome mounts. and they can do practically anything

Keep in mind that a responsible breeders will try to breed like to like. I am not refering to size but to type. I have seen pony/draft crosses with less than satisfactory results. I am being VERY VERY nice in my description..

If you want size, go for something that has been proven to produce a quality offspring.

Feeding a quality baby will cost you no more.

I agree, a big stallion crossed with a little mare could be big trouble . And it's true, crosses of very different types don't always come out very well.

There are many breeds of draft type ponies, though, and the first thing to ask is "what do I wish were different about Sierra's conformation/personality?", and use those things to pick a suitable stallion.

Fell ponies are rare, but they are out there, and are built like small (13-14 hands), stockier friesians. There are also many types of Welsh ponies in each size (from 10 hands to 15 hands-cobs), or even a smaller gypsy vanner (they can be as small as 13 and 14 hands). If you really want something bigger, try either for height OR heftiness, but not both.

I agree with those who would elect not to breed a mare pony with a draft, b/c of the likely birthing complications - unless it was the other way around - pony stud and draft mare.
