Question Down on Fetlocks? New Born TB X baby...

Hey!

My boarders mare just foaled this morning, a super cute baby boy! He is a TB x Quaterhorse.

I had the breeders (stallion owner) come out and look at him this morning, because I noticed he was low in the fetlocks.

She said its common in TB's but to get the owner to call the vet to see what is up and to make sure all is ok.

I just want to do a little research on it to. I know nothing about TB's and have never had a foal down in the fetlocks before.

He is not touching the ground with them but almost, he doesnt really walk on his hooves. Its in his hind end.

So is this normal in TB babies? Do they normally straiten out?

I will try and get pics when Cal gets home with our camera!

Relatively common and as they unfold you should see improvement.

Yeah, it happens. As he moves around and strengthens his tendons he should straighten up and walk properly.

My Trak filly was down on all 4. It straightened itself out by the time she was a month old.

Ok good.... He is such a cute little guy and his owner is so worried now... I will let her know that is really is common and that he should be good once he unfolds!

Thanks

Non surgical corrections can be done while a young horse grows to reportedly bring up low fetlocks. I met people & their horse who said he went from downlow to normal with correction, and I Believe my Shenandoah could have been helped/ improved if hed been similarly addressed as a younger horse. Best wishes w/ & for the lil guy.

It should improve. And like CJ said, there are non-surgical methods that are very successful in improving this. His tendons are just a little weak right now, but as he gets stronger (lots of turnout with mom!) his tendons will also.

Thanks guys! How come this is so common in TB's?

He is doing pretty good trying to run around with mom and stuff but he is still pretty wobbley!

I told the owner what I found out on here and told her to call the vet for any other ideas. At least she is not worried anymore

I will get pics of the little guy and make a thread tommorow!

My last baby was extremely down in his front fetlocks and just plain miserable. Within days he started to strengthen right up and was able to be turned out with mom within a week. It helped tremendously and by 2 weeks old you would have never known it. He was paint x tb and very very long legged.
