| Senior Member+ | Why do they want him in a double bridle? I have only heard of doubles used in upper level dressage, as they are much too severe, in my opinion, to be used with horses other than advanced horses to be used as subtle reinforcers when asking for more collected movements. What you might do at first while you get to know him is ride with the snaffle rein only, since you don't want to make a mistake the first few times you ride him. I've never ridden in a double, but I have used draw reins, and I hold them the same way you would a double in dressage (well, this is ONE way anyways). You basically make sure both reins are straight and that you have contact with the snaffle, and much less contact with the curb, just so that it isn't flapping. I hold the snaffle regularly, with my thumbs on top and my pinkys out on the sides. Then I take the curb (in my case, the draw reins) and hold them with my middle finger and then close it against my hands so it's all secure. I have the curb on the bottom, then the the snaffle is over the double. Then I just hold my hands normally.

| Senior Member | question...are they using a double bridle? or double riens? theres a difference. a double bridle has 2 separate bits and reg. doulble riens is a reg. bridle with a pelhem bit. one set of reins on the curb shank and the other on the ring near the mouthpeice. if thats the case its not as severe as some are thinking, just in the way you use the curb. the pages that have been posted should help you set your hands with the reins though....

| Senior Member+ | Have someone who knows what they are doing show/teach you work with you. Are you talking about riding with a Pelham or with a double/Weymouth bridle? The principles are similar but there are differences and in how you ride with them. Riding off the 'snaffle' rein on a Pelham is not the same as riding with a bridoon. |
