Exclamation does your horse snatch?

Hi everybody, I'm doing a little research on the topic of head snatching, because I have a nine year old KWPN who started snatching last year with no particular reasons and without any consistency... He's usually fine, and even when he is snatching it's not something that makes the ride impossible (except for some rare occasions) but it makes it a lot more difficult. If anyone else has a horse, or is riding a horse who displays this kind of behavior, could you either reply to this post or email me at Devilindap@aol.com. Thanks!

I owned an 18 year old retired hunter who would do that, drove me nuts!! teeth were done, I ride with a light hand, he would even do it in the hackamore on a loose rein, I think that it was a habit for him. I will be very interested in what you find out through your research

Hey "old Lady" I believe what they are referring to is what we old timers call "rooting." Am I right, AC?

Down here we refer to *snatching* as when the horse snatches the reins from your hands. Pulls wiht a forward motion on your hands with his mouth. I hope that is what AC was talking about

ROOTING....!
Okay, now I know what your talking about.
When our horses snatch...it is when being ridden, on a trail for example...and they are snatching bites of this bush and that weed when ever they can!
Isn't it funny how we all can have the same problem or be talking about the same thing yet we call it something different?...!
Gosh I love the "Wonderful World Of Horses!"

I won't tell you what we consider Snatch up here... Must be a southern thing wink

Rooting yea I guess I have heard of that. I had a park horse once that every time from the canter to the walk, he would pull you hard... some times right off! Nervous impulse he had.

Another thing is when a horse does that, spread your hands apart so that way it is a little more severe for them to pull on your arms and they might quit doing it. We had to do that with a school horse once. Riding english, when you transition, spread them out 2 feet so it makes a different angel with the bit.

Check the teeth with a vet and possibley get a chiropractor to come take a look at their alignment.

GOOD LUCK!
