Does your horse have a strong neck?
Must be. One time he spooked and I ended up clear up in front of his withers but I didn't fall off. My arms were around his throat and my nose was in his mane between his ears. My legs were around his neck in front of his chest. (I guess you could call that a "forward seat" )

I just whispered in his ear to stand still while I wriggled myself backwards over his withers and onto his back.

He is a good boy (well - most of the time).
