Anyhoo, here I am at 1:23 in the morning checking in , so you know that I believe you! LOL!
I dont trust the cow vets I worked a cattle ranch Ive seen them palpate most of them wont even look at a horse

Oh my goodness I am GLUED to this thread now... can't wait to find out the outcome... I hope it's just poor nutrition and worms and a young growing mare instead of pregnancy... you sound like you have your hands full enough...

Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers !! And watching closely .... hehe

Yeah this thread is making me crazy! Can't we all just find out for sure already.....argh. I don't get how a basic preggers exam cannot be done for this filly, any competent vet can do this. It's not like you live on the moon!

Yes it is perplexing me as well.
An FYI for anyone curious--
Due to discussion on this thread, I called my vet clinic and asked about trans-abdominal ultrasound-- the vet that called me back, a young woman who is an equine vet and whos family also breeds Standardbreds IIRC, said that trans-abdominal ultrasounds are not used often because they are not very useful-- sometimes until the end of pregancy when the fetus is filling up the mare, and then usually only used on mares that are confirmed pregnant and are also being ulreasounded trans-rectally, but they need additional views of the fetus/placenta in late pregnancy due to concerns-- she said even then they are not always easy to do or read because of the mass and depth of the equine abdomen-- she said most US machines/wands you can get between 4-8 inches penetration, so you have to shave the abdomen and be pretty close to the fetus/the fetus has to be pretty close to the abdominal wall in just that spot, or all you are going to "see" is fluid and intestine-- lots of intestine. LOL. She has not done one since vet school as there hasn't been a need.

She also said that all 6 equine vets at their clinic routinely palpate larger ponies, and she is comfortable palpating smaller ponies, and even minis, and if there is a concern about size, she will ultrasound using the wand ahead of her hand and can usually still get a good read. She said smaller or younger mares and ponies of course are smaller inside than bigger mares, but not as small proportionately as you might think, and we are talking rectally and to think about the size of three or four "road-apples" bunched up vs. an ultrasound wand or medium sized hand-- anyway- -she said she didn't know why palpating or ultrasounding this filly was such a big deal-- or at least doing a blood test for progesterone levels--and to pass along her concern and best wishes.

Thank you for that additional information, Eastowest, on trans-abdominal ultrasounds. Ever since that one post that I made awhile back, I have been wildly curious about what that vet I saw in Eastern Europe was doing trans-abdominally. I still don't know the whys and wherefors, but at least I know now that it wasn't completely "vodoo" science ...

Is this not about a year's difference in age though? The black filly really just looks like an awkward and unhealthy weanling to me.
