Does people sunscreen work on coats?

My new horse has a good bit of sunfading.

I know there are sunscreen spray products for horses, but I was wondering if I could just get some people sunscreen and shake it up with some water (or maybe even in my homemade fly spray) and use that.

Would that be bad for him at all? Would it work? I already put a little bit of sunscreen on the pink part of his nose where his blaze is.

I think it might end up building up on his coat and leaving a goopy residue?

Preventing bleaching is also possible by using a UV rated sheet/flysheet, paprika as a coat supplement or night turnout.

Hmm, yea, I suppose it might build up.

He gets so hot anyways, that I don't want to put a sheet on him. He's on 24/7 turnout...maybe paprika, lol.

I know that there are sprays out there that work, I was just wondering if I could make my own, haha.

The thing is, you want to start preventing the bleaching before it starts...now that he's bleached there isn't a lot you can do to make it go away.

Flysheets also wick away sweat having a cooling effect. They aren't as hot as you might think.

Oh, I know the damage has been done for this season, but I imagine he'll grow a new coat after this winter (I'm thinking ahead), so I'd like to have a game plan ready.

We tried my trainer's air-wicking fly sheet just to keep the flies off him, it was really just mesh, and he was a sweaty mess for the days we tried it. That, and we're still dealing with a few more patches of the rainrot he came with, so I want him to have lots of air.

When Avon came out with SPF in their SSS it was very popular and apparently effective with people who had palominos and apps etc w/ sunburn prone noses.
