I think " rescue " is the most over used word in the horse world today. To me rescue means say a horse is stuck in a bog and I pull it out then it was rescued. If you buy a horse regardless of condition then you bought a horse no rescue involved. Same as I hear people say they don't sell horses, instead they have a " donation price " or a " rescue fee " or any number of differant terms they use. If money exchanges hands for something its a sale plain and simple. I've bought no less then 100 head of cattle and horses over the years or had them given to me that were thin, neglected, abused etc. I've fed them up, fixed them up then sold or given them away bought 17 horses off one place that were in terrable condition. But I never really thought I " rescued " them.

I really can't figure out those who think they " rescue " an animal at an auction. You don't rescue them if you buy one you out bid the next highest bidder.

I most certainly agree with you that it's an overused word, and that's why I started this thread. But, I do believe there are more scenarios other than personally dragging the horse out of a bog, haha.

Many such situations can come in the form of a sale. You see a starving horse in a field, and you convince the owner to sell it. That to me is a rescue, but it's still a bought horse. Outbidding the killbuyer is a rescue, because without your help, the horse would be loaded on a double decker. Outbidding some other random joe? No, that's not a rescue.

"Rescue" means to save from harm, deliver from danger, or to free from risk. I think that definition can apply to several cases in which a horse that's not in immediate danger has been purchased.

Fixer upper. He was underweight, but not knocking on death's door.

If you save a horse from probable death, whether or not money exchanges hands, that's a rescue to me. Most people are not willing to 'give' their horses away even if they are literally knocking on death's door with their one remaining hoof. Doesn't change what you're doing.

Sorry, but I have to dissagree with this. We rescued my horse and she was skin and bones. My close friend had to knock on the mans door and offer him $100 to get her out of that situation, or she would have starved to death there, because there was no food, and she was being raced in this condition. She even had to be cut out of a mesquite tree because she got stuck in it by climbing up it to eat the leaves off. Here she was then..

If you are not liking the term rescue now, you are in for a long haul of dislike. At the rate feed prices are going up, starving animals of every nature will be popping up by the tens of thousands. Perhaps, since you are in the business (it appears anyway) of buying and selling for profit (nothing wrong with that) you would consider buying a pasture load of thin horse, bought cheaply, as a smart business deal, but like it or not, if you sold those horses into better conditions, you "rescued" them.

As far as whether this horse was rescued? No, he wasn't on deaths door......yet. But 3 more months on the same pasture with the same care?
No doubt he would have been in need of rescue. So maybe he is what could be called, "future rescue prospect", give is a more showy tone.

Or as you said, a bit of a "Fixer upper"

Lovely boy too.

I don't see where I said I liked or disliked the term I said I thought it was over used. And fact is I've bought alot of thin underfed livestock over the years. I resell them some people think thats rescue I just figure its buying and selling livestock theres nothing new about it all its gone on for centuries.

I wouldn't call him a rescue, more of a fixer-upper.

Regardless, you did a good thing for him though.
