| Senior Member | Does anyone here use a hackamore?
UM, I'm just about hackamores.... they are bitless bridles, and I'm interested in using one on my pony, because I have tried using just a halter and two leadropes on her, and she responded well, and she doesn't really like bits, so I thought maybe I could use a hackamore. Any advice on this, or where can I get them.....??? thanks a lot!!!!! HORSES ROCK!!

Oh yeah, Love hackamores. I use hackamores and bits on my horses, I have 7 horses and only 2 hackamores, so i use what I have, but the horses doesn't really care if I use a hackamore or a bit, it's just sometimes, when I go out trail riding, I personaly think they would be more comfortable w/o a bit, so I put on their hackamore. :-)

I have ridden in hackamores before, and some horses definitely do better in them than with bits. You need to remember though, that just because it is a hackamore doesn't mean you can be harsh with it. People say they're milder than bits, but I somewhat disagree. That's like comparing apples with oranges, because they tap on different things to steer & slow the horse.

I ride my mare in a very mild hackamore I bought from Dover. It's pretty much just a leather noseband with extra rings. No shank. She loves it.

I use a hack on my mare because she would bite at the shank on the tom thumb bit that we were "told" to use when I got her. She responded very well to the hack. To me as long as the horse will stop while useing a hack, then try it. I have seen other owners use a hack and their horse will not stop. I can't use it on my horse Thunder. He will not stop with a hack and I use now a mild bit on him. Plus he is an ex-race horse as well. Just likes to run. Training him to do barrels now. So far so good. You can also buy a hack just about anywhere.
