If you are a good enough rider, your seat, voice, and legs should be enough to encourage the horse to go forward without any artificial aids. If you are a bad rider, you shoudln't get them because you would probably end up relying on them too much. That is just my opinion, though! The horses you ride may listen perfectly to correct cues and if you give them correct cues you are a good rider but not all horses respond as well as others and your legs need to be reinforced occasionally, i agree with you tho that bad riders should not have spurs, but good riders sometimes need spurs to get the best out of a horse

I use barrel spurs on Sunny. Completley blunted. For english, if Sunny is being stupid and not paying attention to me, I might throw on a pair of Prince of Wales (I think?) spurs for a few minutes just to wake her up and get her focused on ME.

75% of the time I do on Squeaker. If she is in a grouch,"Don't want to" mood, I do,or if she is ignoring my signals to go faster.Yup, she gets pricked in the side a few times, and she straightens up.

I use spurs strictly as a "tune up" tool.

I only use them on horses that do not respond well to proper leg cues. Once they listen to the leg cue and don't need the "reinforcement" I remove them. As I percentage I only wear them for tops 1% of total riding time.

We show and practice with spurs 100% of the time. Like AQHA, the spurs never come off the boot. The spur is NEVER used to make the horse go faster. It is never used to move from a walk to a trot or a lope. If anything the spur is used for slowing not going! It is only used as a cue for turning, backing, stopping, pivoting, side passing, getting the horse round, etc...

In a western pleasure horse, the rein is used at a minimum. The horse is trained from seat and leg cues. BW gave excellent examples of why a spur is a useful training tool.

People who say they would never use them shouldn't because they obviously don't know the correct usage. JMHO
