I use them when riding dressage so I answered "sometimes". For jumping I just use a crop.

Only when competing or training to do so and thats it never on a regular basis. Its pretty pointless if the horses behave. I do have a few over sensitive one here on the ranch that will throw a hissy if you barely even tap them with a spur.

No, I don't use them. I don't need to. My mare is way too sensitive. She'd fly out of her skin if I touched her with spurs.

I do, I really am seeing a difference in a few horses that I'm training. Once they accept a person and are getting onto leg cues, the spurs do wonders for their comprehension. My husband and I cross ride. Basically I'll ride and get them going, he'll ride and do some things....he doesn't wear spurs....so the horse gets the best of both worlds. ....understanding and clarity, and then the "real life" version without spurs. Though I get more precise response, he's not having to nag them as much as we use to, to get the responses we are looking for. MUCH better. Another trainer talked me into starting greenies with them once they are done the kick-up stage and we are moving on.

Spurs are definitly not for a beginner rider. You must know where your legs are, know what you want to accomplish, and have the ability to use your heel without your spur when you do not need the spur if you are starting babies. And have the patience NOT to use them as punishment. No matter HOW irritated you get with the horse. LOL

YES, on my mare they are a must if you don't want your legs to fall off! She's so much work, very lazy, and its just much easier for me to wear my little blunt rowels.

Tho I've also worn them on a horse that had quite a motor, meaning I rarely used them (calf cues instead of heel) but he KNEW they were there, and was much more respectful because of that.

Now, I never wear them on other peoples horses unless instructed to. Or on a sensitive sided horse, of course.

I HATE holding a crop, what a pain, plus western riders just look downright silly holding one, haha. Unless your a barrel racer of course.

I answered "No way!" I have never worn spurs, nor do I ever plan to. I am pretty sure this was in someone's signature once, but it said: Good riders shouldn't need them, bad riders should be allowed them. That is totally true. If you are a good enough rider, your seat, voice, and legs should be enough to encourage the horse to go forward without any artificial aids. If you are a bad rider, you shoudln't get them because you would probably end up relying on them too much. That is just my opinion, though! I am not one of those people, though, who are like: Oh my gosh! That is so mean! Because it is not mean, just unnecessary!

I have a pair (given to me) but I've never used them. Never needed to and I hope it stays that way.
