Do you know the difference?

Just wondering who knows the difference between Sci-Fi and Fantasy... I guess it's a stupid question, but I'm bored. I always thought they were the same and was very interested to know the difference. So, just wondering who else does...

Here's the difference

SCI-FI ~ basically something that could happen... for example a book about traveling to the moon on vacation with robot pilots... that could believably happen in the future...

FANTASY ~ something that could NEVER happen in a million years. Like magical elves, wizards, unicorns.... stuff like that...

How dare you say unicorns can't happen. I saw one just last week! :P

But yes, that's the difference. More or less. Sometimes, Sci-Fi leans into the fantasy genre a little hard, and vice-versa.

Smile

I found this explanation on Amazon.com....
Quote:
Put plainly and simplified, that difference is this: whereas they both include "unusual" circumstances and often take place in "nonexistent" places, Science Fiction provides some scientific explanation, while Fantasy says that it just IS. For instance, if some unknown species appears, say a dragon, Sci-Fi will say that it came from another planet and call it an "alien", but Fantasy will, like I said before, say it just IS.

Science Fiction - In relation to scientific things (stars, moons, space, things taking over etc.)
Fantasy - Imagination, magical (basically wat u defined it as in the first place)

Lol wot an interesting question

my definition of Sci-fi is pretty much aliens, robots, tech/computer stuff, guns, lazers, etc.

Fantasy is unicorns, dragons, princesses, warriors with swords, magic, mythical beasts, elves, faeries, etc.

and yes, i believe you CAN mix them.

and how do YOU know unicorns couldn't happen?

i'm actually writing a story about what i think happened to all the magical creatures on earth.

basically, the earth used to be full of unicorns, and dragons, and gryphons, and faeries, and elves and whatnot. there were also humans with magical powers. in around the 14-1500's they all got sick of being burned at the stake and hunted down as trphies by the mundanes, they all got together and pooled their magic together to open up a giant portal to Angolenor, a trans-dimentional sister-planet to earth. now, earth was/is a big giant dead rock floating out in space that was covered with magical beings.

Angolenor is a semi-sentient magical planet, but it was dying because it's native inhabitance had all been wiped out by a huge magical disaster thousands of years ago. so the magical humans and creatures, when they got to angolenor, brought with them all the things required to restore the natural balance of angolenors ecosystem and the planet slowly recovered.

and now, whenever someone with magical powers is born on earth, since the ability to weild magic is a recessive gene, people can carry it and never know and then all of a sudden they can have a baby that DOES have magic, as soon as that childs ability awakens (usually by age 5, but it can awaken later if the child goes through a very traumatic event, like life-threatening) the minute that power awakens, the child is transported to Angolenor and all memory of that child is wiped clean from anyone who knew them from earth. they're then taken in and trained to use their powers on Angolenor.
